The roof top observatory was part of a new Science and Allied Health building at the San Jacinto College South Campus. The building was dedicated in November of 2013.
Observatory Solutions did the installation of the Pier-Tech 16.5' dome and sub-building in May of 2013. The observatory and observation deck give students have the best unobstructed views of the skies. The observatory is equipped with a Meade 16-inch telescope. Along with providing support for the meteorology and astronomy classes, the observation deck allows students to bring in their own portable telescopes to observe space as well as make weather observations and collect data from wired and wireless weather stations.
Late spring thunderstorms were present every day during the week long dome installation. Although the picture below right may look like it was taken at night, it was 3:00 in the afternoon during a thunderstorm!
